Sir Tom McKillop
Sir Tom McKillop began his career with ICI after post-doctoral research work in Paris.
He moved to ICI Pharmaceuticals Division in 1975 and held a number of positions in Research, including Director of Research for ICI’s Pharmaceutical Business in France, before being appointed General Manager (Research) and then General Manager (Development).
Sir Tom was appointed Technical Director of ICI Pharmaceuticals in 1989, a role which had global responsibility for Research, Development and Production. He was appointed Deputy CEO in 1992.
In 1994 he was appointed CEO of Zeneca Pharmaceuticals (Zeneca having demerged from ICI in 1993) and on completion of the merger of Astra and Zeneca in 1999 he became Chief Executive of AstraZeneca plc, a position he held until retiring at the end of 2005.
Board Mandates
Sir Tom is the Chairman of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group and a Non-Executive Director of BP and Almirall Prodesfarma.
He has been a Senior Non-Executive Director with Lloyds TSB Group and a Non-Executive Director with Amersham.
He has been President of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations, Chairman of the Pharmaceutical Industry Task Force and a member of
The European Round Table of Industrialists.
Sir Tom is currently President of the Science Council.
Awards
Sir Tom has received many scholarly awards and fellowships. He is both a Fellow of The Royal Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a Fellow of The Academy of Medical Sciences, an honorary Fellow of The Royal Society of Chemistry, an honorary Fellow of The Institute of Chemical Engineers and a Companion of The Institute of Management.
