Sir Patrick Gillam

Sir Patrick Gillam
Sir Patrick Gillam began his career with British Petroleum. He progressed through a range of commercial roles including Operations Director of the BP Group, where his activities involved complex negotiations with various members of OPEC for access to crude oil and later with the UK government over BP's North Sea concessions.

In 1981 Sir Patrick was appointed a Managing Director and board member of BP, responsible at various times for Strategy, Financial Control, Minerals, Coal, Shipping, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and North America.

In ten years on the BP board Sir Patrick turned the company’s loss-making Coal and Mineral activities into profitable operations and played a critical role in persuading BP to remain in South Africa, to great positive effect on South Africa’s economy. He played a key role in BP’s acquisition of Standard Oil of Ohio and in the successful integration of the two companies.

After retiring from BP he became in 1993 Executive Chairman of Standard Chartered plc. At that time the bank had suffered catastrophic losses in India. Over the next ten years he played the key role in rebuilding the bank as the prosperous and successful institution it is today.

From 1997 to 2003 he was Non-Executive Chairman of Royal & Sun Alliance Group, the UK’s second largest insurer.

From 2003 until 2005 he was Chairman of Asia House, a private organisation fostering commercial and cultural links between the UK and Asia.

Sir Patrick’s past mandates include Chairmanships of the UK Chapter of the International Chamber of Commerce, the World Industry Council on the Environment and the Oil Industry Advisory Board to the International Energy Agency. He has also been a member of the Board of the International Monetary Conference and member of the Governor of the Bank of England’s Advisory Group.
